I have a friend who set up a consultancy business 30 years ago and recently sold it for a pretty sum. I asked him what the secret of his success was. “Well, we never had an HR department,” he said.

I have a similarly jaundiced view of human resources – although at our firm, it’s a long time since it was called that. Rosemary, who is head of whatever it is, has announced that though formerly known as Head of Human Capital, she wishes to be called Head of People – the word ‘People’ being more inclusive, apparently. I suspect that she’s also keen to shed the ‘Capital’ bit because it reminds people of the free market, which is not respectable in the circles she moves in.
