Frequently understaffed and underfunded, internal comms is often seen as the poor relation of PR. Even so, any firm that has employees, a brand and a strategy also needs to effectively communicate internally. James Lumley finds out more.

“Internal comms is about hearts and minds,” says Jennifer Oliver, internal communications manager at law firm Capsticks LLP.

“It puts people at the centre. Done well, it connects people to a firm’s vision and values, provides a sense of purpose and belonging, and motivates people to give of their best. It answers the question, Why should I go the extra mile for this organisation?”

For centuries the phrase ‘hearts and minds’ has been used by military leaders. This is because, as every general knows, it’s hard to win a battle let alone a war if your soldiers aren’t behind you, and communicating effectively and consistently to a large internal audience doesn’t happen by accident.
